Gutter Clearance in West Wiltshire

Why Gutters Need Clearing
With the passing of time and seasons, moss, leaves and debris build up within your home’s gutters which restrict the flow of rainwater causing blockages and leaks. This debris needs to be cleared periodically to ensure your gutter system worked correctly just like servicing your car.
If your gutters are neglected you may experience leaking gutter unions or overflowing in sections resulting in common issues such as damp and water damage to wooden materials used on or around your homes roofing and guttering boards.

How Are Your Gutters Cleared
Your gutters are primarily cleared using a high powered vacuum system which has long poles able to reach up and into your homes gutters. It’s operated safely from the ground and powered by our mobile generator system. For stubborn blockages, leaking gutter union and gutter sections that need re-fastening or re-inserting, we’ll access your gutters using a ladder and suitable safety aids.

- Camera Inspection – Your gutters are assessed using a high reach wireless camera with a live feed. It’s vital to see the condition inside the gutter sections and confirm if your gutter outlets are blocked.
- Gutter Clearance – We’ll vacuum clear your gutters. Ensure all unions and gutter sections are secure and correctly clipped together. All outlet unions (where the rainwater runs into the downpipes) are confirmed to be clear with a running water test.
- Gutter to Drainage Transition Check – All gutter system exits points are assessed where they exit into a gulley, drain, soakaway or onto the ground.
When Do Gutters Need to be Cleared
Weeds in your gutters

If you notice weeds, grass, or even small trees sprouting from your gutters, it’s a clear sign they are filled with organic debris. A mixture of dirt and stagnant water creates a fertile environment for seeds to take root, indicating a significant blockage.
Water stains on your walls

Overflowing water from a blocked gutter can run down the exterior walls of your house, leaving behind streaks, discolouration, or mildew on the siding. This continuous exposure to moisture can also seep into your foundation, leaving behind water stains and causing more severe structural issues.
Sagging or drooping gutters

The accumulation of heavy debris like wet leaves, mud, and sticks puts a great deal of strain on your gutters. Over time, this weight can cause the gutter sections to sag, pull away from the roofline, or bend out of shape. This reduces their effectiveness and can eventually cause them to collapse completely.
Overflowing gutters

This is the most obvious sign that your gutters are clogged. Instead of flowing freely through the downspout, rainwater spills over the sides of the gutter during a storm. This can cause significant water damage to your roof, siding, and foundation.

When Do Gutters & Fascia Need Washing
Visible streaks, stains, or discolouration

The most straightforward sign that your gutters and fascias need washing is visible grime. Over time, dirt, moss, and algae can build up on the exterior surfaces, leading to noticeable black, green, or brown streaks and an overall dingy appearance. These stains are especially visible on white or light-coloured uPVC.
Mold or mildew growth

Persistent dampness from overflowing or leaking gutters can encourage the growth of mold and mildew on the surface of your fascias and near the roofline. This not only harms the aesthetics of your home but can also cause deterioration of the material over time.
General fading and loss of curb appeal

Even if there are no specific stains, your gutters and fascias can simply lose their luster over the years. Pollutants, dirt, and sun exposure can cause the material to look dull and faded. A regular professional wash restores their original vibrancy, significantly improving your home’s curb appeal.

Gutter Cleaning West Wiltshire
Frequently Asked Questions
Where in Wiltshire are gutter cleaning services available?
Our gutter cleaning services are available through most of West Wiltshire inc Bradford on Avon | Corsham | Chippenham | Calne | Devizes | Melksham | Trowbridge | Westbury. Our residential gutter cleaning services also serve the small villages and areas between these locations. We’re based in Melksham meaning we’re usually within 30 minutes of the areas we serve aiding our emergency gutter cleaning service where we can sometimes visit you on the same day.
What’s the difference between ‘Gutter Clearance’ and ‘Gutter & Fascia Washing’?
Gutter clearance (debris removal): Removing leaves, moss, twigs and blockages from inside the gutter system so rainwater can flow correctly. This prevents having clogged gutters ,overflowing gutters and similar gutter issues.
Gutter & Fascia Washing: Cleaning the outside surfaces of gutters, fascias, and soffits to restore a bright, clean appearance and prevent staining. This service is purely cosmetic and useful for cleaning away gutters covered in green algae and similar.
Many homeowners choose to have both gutter cleaning services completed together for full protection and curb appeal.
Why is Gutter Cleaning important?
Gutter Clearance: Blocked gutters prevent rainwater from draining properly which leads to overflowing water, damp patches, roof damage, and even foundation issues. Regular gutter clearance and maintenance ensures water flows freely, protecting your home’s structure.
Gutter & Fascia Washing: Prevents staining, algae growth, and long-term material degradation. If left uncleaned gutters & fascias will degrade faster reducing the potential shine when finally cleaned.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Many homes benefit from gutter clearance once a year — typically in spring (to remove winter debris) and autumn (after leaves fall). Homes near trees or in moss-prone areas may require more frequent gutter cleaning. For new homes and homes far from trees it may only be necessary to have your gutters cleared every few years.
Gutter & Fascia Washing is usually recommended every 1–2 years for appearance and maintenance. It’s important to not allow green or black algae to dwell too long on your gutters as they tend to stain the finish over time.
Do you use ladders or specialist equipment?
Gutter Clearance professionals typically use gutter vacuum systems with telescopic poles to clear gutters safely from the ground. This eliminates the need for ladders in most cases. For Gutter & Fascia Washing, water-fed poles with soft brushes and purified water are commonly used.
In both scenarios having ladders with the required safety aids is vital. During any gutter cleaning job there’s a small risk that a gutter part may be dislodged (some sections are held only with clips) and will need re-fixing. During Gutter Clearance there is often blockages within downspout sections with obstructions that can only be cleared properly by dismantling that gutter section.
For this reason we advise against using any gutter cleaner that does not posses professional trade or industrial rated ladders and the necessary working at height competence.
How can I tell if my gutters are blocked?
Common signs of a blocked gutter include:
- Rainwater overflowing during heavy showers
- Damp patches or mould on exterior walls
- Sagging gutters due to weight of debris
- Plants or grass sprouting from the gutter line
- Water marks on fascias and soffits
If you notice these, a gutter clearance is likely overdue.
Can gutter cleaning damage my property?
If completed professionally and with care, the risk is minimal as with any work around the home. The gutter cleaning processes do not cause any damage but there is always the risk of an accident of some kind.
What is common for gutter cleaning of both types for home within Wiltshire is that a piece of the guttering system may become dislodged and may require re-fixing or re-clipping into position. As long as your gutter cleaner has ladders this can be remedied quickly without fuss.
Will gutter cleaning improve the look of my home?
Yes. While Gutter Clearance / debris removal prevents damage, Gutter & Fascia Washing transforms the look of your roofline. Black streaks, green algae and weathering stains can make a home look neglected. Gutter & Fascia Washing restores brightness and often makes your property appear freshly maintained.
How much does gutter cleaning cost?
Gutter Cleaning prices vary by property size. As a guide:
- Bungalow: £79 – £109+
- Semi-detached: £99 – £139+
- Detached: £109 – £149+
These prices apply to each type of service (Gutter Clearance or Gutter & Fascia Washing) separately. You’ll add £20 to include a Conservatory or a Detached outbuilding such as a separate garage or garden office.
We provide a discount of roughly 10% if the services are grouped as a package and there’s an optional charge of £39 if you require an Urgent Gutter Cleaning Service where we may be able to visit you on the same or following day.
Do you clean downpipes as well?
Yes. A proper gutter clearance service should include checking downpipes. If they’re blocked, water won’t drain even if the gutter is cleared. Professionals can flush or vacuum downpipes to restore flow. If your downpipes goes straight into the ground to a drain or soak-away we can only ensure the section above ground is cleared. Below ground level falls into the remit of drainage.
Is gutter cleaning messy?
Not when done correctly. Gutter debris is vacuumed or sometimes scooped into waste containers leaving your home area tidy. Gutter & Fascia Washing is usually carried out with purified water which leaves no streaks or residue. This can sometimes see dirty water get onto your windows. If so we’ll give them a cleaning off as necessary to remove any mess we cause.
Can gutter cleaning help prevent pests?
Yes. Blocked gutters filled with moss, leaves and stagnant water create breeding grounds for insects and nesting spots for birds or rodents. Regular gutter cleaning removes these habitats and reduces pest risks.
Do you offer guarantees or before/after photos?
We provide before-and-after photos using pole-mounted cameras so you can see the results from ground level. We also offer a guarantee that gutters will remain clear for at least 3 months.
How long does gutter cleaning take?
For a standard semi-detached property, gutter clearance typically takes 1–2 hours. Adding Gutter & Fascia washing may extend the job depending on the level of dirt. Larger detached homes can take longer but most jobs are completed in half a day or less.
What time of year is best for gutter cleaning in Wiltshire?
Wiltshire is fairly green with lots of trees so the two key times for gutter cleaning in the year are:
- Late autumn (after leaves have fallen to prepare for winter rains).
- Early spring (to clear moss, twigs, and winter debris).
If you see an overflow or signs of blocked gutters at any time it’s best not to wait until the next season.
My gutters are very faded, can you restore the shine?
When gutters and fascias become very faded or discoloured through staining to the actual plastic, it’s often not cost effective to restore the shine. UPVC restorers do exist which essentially polish the surface to a shine however, this needs to be done by hand and is extremely time consuming. Additionally, the effects of this restoring are unlikely to last for longer than a year or two meaning the effort needs repeating most years. After a few years the cost of this will outweigh new gutters. Where gutters and fascias are very faded or stained to the point that they cosmetically impact your home even after cleaning we advise you consider merely replacing them.
The cost for replacing faded gutters will be more in the short term but the results will last and you get the added benefits of a new warranted gutter system.
I’ve got gutters over a conservatory or flat roof. Can you still clean them?
We can Clear and Wash gutters over sloped roofs and conservatory roofs with ease. One exception is that we’re unable to remove heavy gutter blockages when they’re in a section directly over your conservatory roof. Clumps of grass, soil or something like fallen cement pointing from a roof verge could fall onto your conservatory roof and cause damage.
Where this is the case we advise referring to a specialist contractor that employ protective scaffolding, powered access or use protective boards over the conservatory roof.
The best route is prevention and having your gutters cleared before debris, grass and weeds are able to build up.
Do I need to be home when you clean my gutters?
No. We only require external access around your home to complete any Gutter Cleaning. We have all required equipment, water and power within our vans to enable us to work freely at any home through West Wiltshire.
Do you use chemicals to clean my gutters?
No chemicals are used when Washing your Gutters and Fascias. We use purified water which has a very high cleaning power.
Can I clean my gutters myself?
Many homeowners do and it isn’t a complicated task in general. However there is 3 key reasons most homeowners don’t clean their gutters themselves.
- Safety – Most gutters are positioned at roughly 2.5meteres high requiring extension ladders. Also because many gutters protrude out from the wall of the house additional ladder equipment is required to offset the ladder from the wall to avoid having to leave back and outwards to access the gutter. This otherwise increases the risk of a fall and subsequent injury
- Time – For a homeowner without our experience and specialist equipment such as a gutter vacuum, the task of cleaning your gutters will often take multiple times longer than a professional. For this reason it’s usually preferred to merely pay to have the task completed promptly without the risk.
- Detail – Our gutter cleaning systems allow us to reach residential gutters in difficult positions such as over a sloped roof or a high gable end apex. Our brush systems also allow for intricate cleaning in and around brackets and into crevices meaning we can clean your gutters with a high level of attention to detail. Gutter cleaning by a homeowner without this equipment limits how detailed the task can be completed.
Does rainwater keep gutters cleared enough?
Rainwater will aid in clearing gutters in some occasions but on the whole, rainwater alone will not sufficiently clear your gutters and you will require gutter clearance at some point over time.
There’s power lines running near my gutters or house; can you safely clean them?
Power lines running near to your gutters presents a severe risk of electrocution for anyone cleaning your gutters. We can clean your gutters even if a power line is nearby although we’ll need a few weeks to have the power lines checked and shrouded where necessary. We can arrange this on your behalf and there’s no additional charge for this as it’s provided by the Distribution Network Operator. For many homes in Wiltshire the DNO is Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks.
Is there any gutters or houses you can’t clean?
There’s some gutters and house types we unfortunately cannot clean. These are:
Three Storey Houses – Our services cover ground and first floor gutters only because this is the height we are able to safely work upto. Beyond this height, we have no means of physically accessing your gutters by hand if any repairs or blockages need attention.
Cast Iron Gutters – These guttering systems require specialist expertise as they utilise difference sealing and assembly systems to UVPC gutters.
Houses without complete Exterior Access – We require complete access around your home without transiting equipment through your home or outbuilding. This is related to professional liability and something we cannot offer.
No Parking Available – Our gutter cleaning equipment operates from our vans and so we need to park within 20 metres of so from your home.
Are you insured for gutter cleaning and do you have the relevant training?
We are insured specifically for gutter cleaning tasks and we hold PASMA licenses which certify our use of mobile scaffold access towers. This also covers our competency for working at height so you can rest assured we are trained and knowledgeable to complete work at your home with minimised risks.
What factors are important for me to consider when hiring a gutter cleaner?
Gutter cleaning services are offered by many businesses and gutter cleaning tends to exist within roofing, window cleaning and general exterior cleaning companies. There’s some aspects that give an indication as to what makes a good service provider:
Clarity and Detail – With any service business there tends to be a correlation between the level of detail they provide and their competence. It’s important to know in advance exactly what is covered and what is not. Exactly how the work is completed. Also, is there explanations of what variations may exist of what ifs. Check for these. Terms and conditions written in plain language and tone with detailed points convey experience. Thin terms often mean that a business has limited experience of the what ifs and scenarios that occur from time to time.
Equipment – Because gutter parts can become loose or dislodged in cleaning and because certain gutter blockages require us to dismantle part of the gutter system; it’s essential in our opinion, to only use a gutter cleaner that carries ladders. A gutter cleaner without a ladder has no way of re-fixing a bracket that comes loose leaving you with an issue.
Insurance – It’s not a legal requirement for a business to have insurance unless they have employees. Don’t take the risk. Check your gutter cleaner has adequate Public Liability (PL) insurance and also insurance for property they are working on. Basic PL insurance alone does not cover a gutter cleaner damaging your property by accident.
Do you recommend gutter brushes?
Absolutely not and especially not for homes within a semi-rural area like West Wiltshire. The concept sounds good initially. A brush device that sits in your gutters and stops debris from getting in. However, the idea is flawed in our experience. What we’ve seen over the many years we’ve worked with gutters is that gutter brushes work initially but over time the nylon bristles get clogged with decomposed dirt and leaves which clog the gutter brush. At this point the gutter brush needs removing by hand and shaking clean which causes a mess. The gutters then needs vacuuming as there’s generally dirt left inside and the gutter brush can be re-inserted.
With this cycle you find that with a gutter brush you may still need the gutters to be cleaned every few years anyway but each time it needs cleaning it’s roughly 3 times the effort and cost. In effect, most homeowners are better off just having their gutters cleared every year or so and saving the money from not buying the gutter brushes.
From experience, most Wiltshire homeowners when they see how clogged the gutter brushes become merely opt to leave them removed.
I think my soak-away is blocked, can this be fixed with gutter clearance?
Gutter clearance alone will not remedy a blocked or ineffective soak-away. A soak-away becomes clogged with debris over many years and it’s performance declines often to a point where the water backs up the downpipe and overflows during periods of heavy rain.
We’re able to provide a temporary fix by diverting the rainwater onto the ground in some instances if the issue is severe but ultimately you’ll need to consult a drainage professional to clear or rebuild the soak-away.
Should I have gutter downpipes guards fitted in my gutters?
Donwpipe guards are often used incorrectly. The intended purpose is to protect debris entering the downpipes to protect your soak-away. However, they tend to be used regardless of whether the downpipe below leads to a soak-away or not.
The key issue is that the downpipe guards are very easily blocked. The small shuttle-cock style guards block the easiest. The balloon style gutter guards are slightly better as they’re not easily covered by debris so quickly.
The best solution in our experience is to eliminate downpipe guards altogether since they can only be serviced at height. For a small amount more ‘leaf separators’ can be purchased and installed on the downpipe itself close to ground level. These devices filter leaves and debris out and can be cleaned by you as the homeowner from ground level meaning you can maintain the gutters in this respect quickly, easily and without professional cost. The cost of a leaf separator device is still very reasonable.
What if you book Gutter Clearance but when you inspect my gutters you find they don’t need clearing?
It’s occasionally the case that we arrive to clear your gutters and we find the gutters merely have a simple issue causing symptoms. In this instance, we’ll apply our min charge of £79 which covers attendance and associated admin. We’ll complete a camera inspection and report for every property we visit and address the issue to ensure your gutters are clear and flowing.
Will Gutter & Fascia Washing make my windows dirty?
Yes slightly. Because we use purified water for Gutter & Fascia Washing some dirty water from washing your gutters will fall onto your windows. Following cleaning we’ll usually give the affected windows a once over. This won’t be a full and comprehensive clean but we’ll wash them off in general and aim to leave them as clean as they were prior to cleaning.
Please do note that we are not professional window cleaners and cleaning windows well is very nuanced. As a result we’re unlikely to achieve a perfect finish so please bear this in mind. In most cases you’ll have a dedicated window cleaner and we’re happy to aim to visit a week or two before your window cleaner is likely to visit you.
